Unit Seventeen, The Forum, Sheffield, 2016. Unit Seventeen explores how the human psyche reacts to events and emotions and translates that response into various art forms. Whilst the inspiration may be particular to the individual artists combine to produce art that resonates within the viewer as they experience a part of the artist’ s own psyche. The exhibition brings together nine contemporary artists from Sheffield Hallam University who each have their own unique styles but are connected by their interest in the human psyche. Emma Smith What Lies Beneath useing meticulously drawn lines and stitch, juxtaposes art and craft, challenging preconceived ideas of traditional process and structure. Kirsty Green Senses and Performance is a film made to illustrate the experience of the artist when people react to her deafness. Chelsea Abbott Trophy is a series of photographs that document bruises on women who participate in contact sports and challenges perceptions of the fragility of the human form. Susan Burley Pose uses drawings created in life drawing classes as inspiration. Contemporary materials are used to create soft sculptures to investigate how people react to the human form. Katie Gammage For All the Dead Known To You Alone is a large scale installation piece that represents the emotional upheaval of grief. Steve Johnstone Breathless 1, 2, 3 uses sculpture and photography to engage with the effects of the artist’s lung disease. Fran Crane Reflections uses drawings, photography and text to reflect on life. Dean Judd Amongst the Madness is part of a series of work that forms a narrative through the characters within the image. Jade Bilton Untitled uses print to create a textile diary of the artist’s thoughts. The exhibition explores emotions which are recognizable to many. Whilst the work is being exhibited in the present space there is also a suggestion of its relationship to a different time in the artist’s life and to another person’s own context of time as it relates to their experiences. |
