It's the Sunday before the exhibition opens at the Millennium Gallery and time to start the installation - we only have five hours so it's painting, cleaning, hanging etc. Monday was the technical day when the lighting etc was finalised. Tuesday we open with a preview event in the afternoon. It's the final week before the Unit 17 exhibition and the stress/excitement is growing I also have a piece accepted for the Platform 16 exhibition and have to install the last Sunday of the Unit Seventeen exhibition!
Today is all about the glamorous behind the scene work like shopping for paint, brushes nails etc to spruce the space up. Doing final flyer drops and pushing the exhibition on social media etc! It's also the time to finish pieces off, sorting out framing, revisiting pieces etc. The next big 'event' will be the hang! Today I was notified that one of my pieces had been accepted for the 16 exhibition at the Millennium galleries for the second year running - both exciting and daunting as the dates overlap with the Unit 17 exhibition.
The piece chosen is Reimagined Relic - something I created last year. The pice linked into my investigations into the internal body structure, an ongoing fascination with the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford and looking at how to get people to be challenged and engaged with my work and to take the ideas, things that interest them out of the gallery and possibly encourage them to create something themselves in so doing giving my piece a life beyond that one exhibition. So the piece is a vintage cigar box, with a red velvet inner, slightly battered, something you would not give a second glance to. However, inside is a mind blowing new scientific discovery two bone fragments with a lattice structure that invites you to look more closely. When you do they reveal that the relic bones actually made up of miniature human like structures. Today we are curating the rest of the Until 17 exhibition, bringing all the work together and looking at how they fit together – it could be a long day and tomorrow is the official opening with the preview starting at 6.00pm – where has the time gone?
The vinyl for the windows and doors was installed today, another exciting but scary moment seeing my name as part of the artists exhibiting in Unit 17!
